Is it possible that nutrition can affect our mental health?

Our brain is working 24/7, even when we are fall asleep and needs "fuel" that comes from the food we eat! Recent studies showed that the food we eat directly affect our mood! Eating high-nutritious food like fruits, vegetables that are rich in vitamin and minerals nourishes our brain and decrease oxidative stress (free radicals) which can destroy our cells!

How can the food you consume influence your feelings?

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that assist our body to control sleep, appetite, mediate moods and reduce pain. It is produced in our gastrointestinal tract that is linked with nerve cells and therefore digestive system helps guide our emotion. Serotonin is highly affected by the "good" bacteria and has an essential role to our health! Their role is to produce a strong barrier against toxins and improve how well we absorb essential nutrients from the food in order to limit inflammation and bring into action neural pathways that link between the gut and the brain. Usually, when we're stressed we feel it in our gut and digestion may increase or slow down how we're feeling!

What foods should I choose?

It is essential that your diet contain lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein (such as brocolli, avocados, blueberries, fish, turmeric, eggs, almonds, dark chocolate). In contrast, you should avoid high sugar, processed foods, high sodium and saturated fat foods.
